George Kyriakides was born in Larnaca, on Cyprus' southern coast, in 1921. George was apprenticed as a silversmith to his father Petrou Kyriacou during his early working years, and in 1948 he went to Melbourne, Australia. He married Silvia Sarandis, a Greek immigrant's daughter, in 1949 and they had two children. He worked as a silversmith for a local silverware company before launching his own silversmithing company, Saracen Plate Company, at 152 Lygon St, Carlton. They were primarily a manufacturing wholesale business that sold to huge clients like Myers and Prouds Jewellery. Due to the difficulty in getting pure metals, George sold the wholesale silversmithing portion of the firm in 1974, but continued to work as a jeweller under the name GK Jewellery until his retirement and beyond. George was later noted for his philanthropic generosity, and he died in 2006, leaving behind his two children.
