Dutch graphic designer Maurits Cornelis Escher created woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints with mathematical themes. In his work, he explores infinity, reflection, symmetry, perspective, truncated and stellated polyhedra, hyperbolic geometry, and tessellations, among other mathematical objects and operations. He drew inspiration from nature early in his career and made studies of insects, landscapes, and plants like lichens, which he then employed as features in his artwork. While travelling in Italy and Spain, he sketched cities, towns, buildings, and architectural details like the tilings of the Alhambra and the Mezquita of Cordoba as his interest in mathematics grew. Escher's artwork gained widespread recognition among academics, mathematicians, and the general public, particularly after Martin Gardner included it in his Mathematical Games column in Scientific American. His work has been featured in numerous technical papers as well as on the covers of numerous books and albums.
