The company was founded in Melbourne in May 1850 by Joseph Wilkie and John Campbell Webster. George Leavis Allan joined in 1863 and became the sole proprietor in 1875. By 1877, it was the largest musical warehouse in the Southern Hemisphere. It became a major force in the Australian music scene, operating for over 150 years in the Melbourne CBD. In addition to selling instruments, the company was a significant publisher of sheet music and was involved in early Australian radio broadcasting (3AW). Introduced in August 1919, the name "Morel" was inspired by the pseudonym of composer Charles Arthur Rawlings, who supplied sheet music to the firm.
