Max McGraw established McGraw Electric in 1900 as an electrical contractor, specialising in the installation of power in homes. At the time, the founder was 17 years old. The business gradually grew to include industrial and commercial structures. It acquired other companies throughout the years, eventually transforming into an electrical equipment maker. McGraw Electric and the Pennsylvania Transformer Company joined in 1952, preserving McGraw Electric's identity. Thomas A. Edison, Inc. was founded in 1910 as a reorganisation of the Edison Manufacturing Co., a company with roots dating back to the nineteenth century. Edison started out making phonographs and records, then moved on to radios and dictation machines. In 1927, Charles Edison was named president of the company, which he led until 1957, when it was sold and amalgamated with the McGraw Electric Company.
