Vintage Decca Portable Wind-up Gramophone from C.1948-50. Manufactured in England. The Decca brand name was first used in 1914 for the Dulcephone, a portable gramophone made by English firm Barnett Samuel & Sons Ltd. They copyrighted it as the first portable phonograph, and British soldiers took several of them overseas during World War I. Barnett Samuel and Sons' gramophone manufacturing branch was renamed the Decca Phonograph Company, and in 1929 Edward Lewis founded the Decca Record Company in England, which combined the manufacture of gramophones and records. Jack Kapp founded Decca in the United States in 1934, five years after the British firm was founded. The new label's debut product was produced in the heart of the Great Depression, and it attempted to appeal to budget-conscious customers by selling recordings for only 35 cents each. Bing Crosby was the first recording artist Kapp signed for the new label. By the end of the 1930s, Crosby had established himself as a great star. American Decca had grown in value to the point that it was purchased by the Music Corporation of America in 1959. (MCA). For a few more years, records bearing the Decca label were available, but this well-known label quickly faded from view.
