Westclox had intended to begin manufacturing clocks in Scotland in 1939, but the advent of World War II forced them to wait until 1948. All of the clocks were made at the Scottish factory, a complete production facility, utilising simple raw materials. They were producing 10,000 clocks per week by 1949, and by 1950, they had made one million clocks. A third or more of the clocks made in Scotland were shipped to 110 other nations. Around 1,100 people were worked at the Scottish plant in the middle of the 1960s. 400 employees were let off as a result of the plant's struggles in 1967 and 1968 as a result of competition from cheap clocks from the Iron Curtain nations. Due to the development of Quartz clock technology, which decreased the production and sales of mechanical clocks, the factory was forced to close in 1988.
