Wiltshaw and Robinson was founded in 1890 by James Frederick Wiltshaw, William Herbert Robinson, and James Alcock Robinson, trading as Wiltshaw and Robinson. In 1894, the company's factory was renamed the Carlton Works, and the trademark "Carlton Ware" was introduced. Wiltshaw and the Robinsons' commercial partnership was dissolved in 1911, allowing Wiltshaw to incorporate Wiltshaw and Robinson Limited, a new limited company. After James Wiltshaw died in an accident at Stoke-on-Trent railway station in 1918, his son Frederick Cuthbert Wiltshaw took over administration of the company. In 1930, the company expanded further by acquiring Birks, Rawlins, and Co. Albert Pierrepoint found Leslie Green guilty of the murder and ordered him hanged at Winson Green Prison on December 23, 1952. Green had previously worked as a chauffeur for the family. In 1958, the company was renamed Carlton Ware Limited, and after Frederick Cuthbert Wiltshaw's death in 1966, it was sold to Arthur Wood and Sons. The business thrived until it ran into major financial difficulties in the late 1980s, forcing it to file for receivership in 1989. Grosvenor Ceramic Hardware tried unsuccessfully to save the company, and production was finally halted in 1992. Francis Joseph of the Carlton Ware Design Centre, Roslyn Works, Stoke-on-Trent, restored the Carlton Ware brand in 1997. This Antique Serving Dish Comes in Solid Condition and with Original Makers Decal from 1894-1927 period.
