Pieter Bruegel the Elder created the oil-on-panel painting The Wedding Dance in 1566. The piece, which belongs to the Detroit Institute of Arts museum and was found in England in 1930, was brought to Detroit by the museum's director. The Wedding Dance, The Peasant Wedding (1567), and The Peasant Dance are thought to be a group of three Bruegel paintings created at about the same period (1569). 125 wedding guests are shown in the painting. The brides wore black, as was usual in the Renaissance, and the grooms donned codpieces. Dancing was frowned upon by the authorities and the church, and the painting can be read as both a critique and a comedic portrayal of the stereotypically oversexed, overindulgent peasant class of the time. Voyeurism is represented throughout the entire piece of art.
