The pre-war German Contax II and III 35mm rangefinder cameras were renamed "Kiev" and were produced by the Kiev-based Arsenal firm starting around 1947. The Kiev 6C employed the same lens mount, indicating that it took some design cues from the Praktisix or Pentacon Six. The camera is frequently referred to as the "6S" because "C" is the Cyrillic alphabet's counterpart of the letter "S" in the Roman alphabet. Some claim that this "C" ("s"-sound) was an allusion to the Pentacon Six lens mount. The camera name was printed in Latin letters on some Kiev 6C cameras. It features a focal plane shutter with a quick peak speed of 1/1000s.
