Vintage Australian pottery hand painted vases by Christian Vocke. Maker's mark to base, see images. Christian Vocke (1942 - ) was born in Berlin and came to Australia in 1964. Settling in South Australia, he worked for many years as a storeman at Adelaide Zoo before becoming a full-time artist in 1972. Originally a painter, he took advantage of the boom in ceramics at the time to make slipcast functional ware painted in underglaze enamels with Aboriginal motifs, settlers' scenes and Australian flora and fauna. Based in Auburn, SA, in the Clare Valley where he still lives and works, he and business partner Armin Ptak ( -1988) signed their work 'APCV' in various forms. In 1987, Vocke began selling work under the 'Jester' icon through the newly opened Auburn Gallery. Some work is also signed 'CV' or 'C. Vocke'. Work made with Graham Pike is signed 'CVGP'. When the Auburn Gallery was sold in 2000, Vocke sought out other galleries for his work, now mainly paintings in acrylic. Recently, he has also been making collagraph prints.
