Very Rare Collectible Mid-Century Retro Electric Kitchen Wall Clock manufactured by Metamec in C.1960s, England. Metamec was a household clock maker situated in Dereham, Norfolk, England, in the second half of the twentieth century. "Metamec" is an acronym for "metal-work and mechanics." In about 1941, the company began as an offshoot of the Jentique furniture company, which produced crates for instruments and explosives during WWII. The first Metamec clock was a "701" mains-powered mantle clock (approx. 1947). Metamec created high-quality clocks, and the factory expanded with the purchase of new machines that allowed them to create their own movements rather than relying on movements from other businesses. During the 1960s and 1970s, the factory expanded to about 750 employees, producing 350 different clock models and 25,000 clocks every week. They went on to become known for their huge 'Sunburst' chrome, teak, and brass clocks. At the time, Metamec was the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Due to German clock industry penetration and imports from the Far East, the company fell in the 1980s. In December 1984, Metamec went into receivership, and in January 1985, FKI of Halifax, West Yorkshire, bought the company and continued to use the name until 1993. Ross Consumer Electronics ran the Metamec plant in East Dereham until it closed in 1994. The RCE site in Southampton was chosen as the new location for production. The name "Metamec" is still in use, and a clock manufacturer in Derbyshire is producing Metamec clocks. Collectible item need repair.
