Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins, an influential American artist born in 1844, was known for his realistic paintings, photography, sculpture, and teaching. He focused on depicting the people of his hometown, Philadelphia, throughout his career spanning over 40 years. Eakins created hundreds of portraits, showcasing the intellectual and cultural life of his time.

Beyond traditional portraits, Eakins ventured into larger paintings set in various urban and outdoor locations, capturing the human figure in motion. He was particularly fascinated by the nude form and utilized outdoor settings to paint figures in natural light, often incorporating perspectives he studied in photography. As an educator, Eakins left a significant impact on American art, though he faced challenges and controversies, including scandals that impacted his career. Despite minimal recognition during his lifetime, he is now regarded as one of the most important American artists, celebrated for his profound realism.
