This is an Official Reproduction of a Japanese Ukiyo-e artwork titled "Takigawa of the Ogiya in the First Sale of the New Year" from the series "A Comparison of Selected Beauties of the Pleasure Quarters" from the artist Eishi Chōbunsai. Originally drawn in the 1700s on woodblock, this is an Official Reproduction printed in Italy on silk based paper.
Eishi, also known as Hosoda Eishi, was a prominent ukiyo-e artist, painter, designer, and book illustrator from Edo (now Tokyo). Unlike most ukiyo-e painters, a commercial art form linked to the urban middle classes, Eishi came from a high-ranking samurai family of the Fujiwara clan. He received a classical artistic education within the parameters of the elite Kanō school, under the tutelage of the painter Kanō Eisen'in Michinobu, head of the painting workshop at the palace of the Tokugawa Ieharu shogun. However, instead of continuing his promising career as a painter of official commissions for powerful samurai, in his late twenties he requested a leave of absence to devote himself to the art of ukiyo-e. This decision is highly unusual, as Eishi had a position and income at that time that no ukiyo-e artist could ever dream of, which leads us to believe that he had a tendency towards bohemianism and the attractions of the emerging culture of the city of Edo.
He trained in this popular style with a little-known artist from the Torii school named Bunryūsai. Eishi's early work as an illustrator of ukiyo-e novels is documented in 1785. His great specialty was the genre of beautiful women (bijinga), and there is no doubt that this artist preferred to surround himself with geisha rather than samurai.
