This device was used before digital calculators in order to perform a range of numerical manipulations. These devices were manufactured and sold between 1922, all the way into the 1970’s, by Carbic Ltd, London. This particular example dates from around the 1960’s. The calculator extends to around 26 cm long and retracts down to around 15 cm. The top and bottom cylinders rotate independently, allowing the numbers on their respective scales to slide past two cursor marks on the central brass sleeve. Calculations are performed by rotating the scales appropriately. This item would make the perfect gift for the collector or for those interested in vintage and antique mathematical instruments.
