The Dresden Porcelain Company began its first production at the site of the current facility in 1888. The Blyth Porcelain Company acquired the original Dresden Porcelain Company in 1905, and it continued to manufacture china teaware under the backstamp Diamond China by Blyth. A.T. Finney and Sons, who also operated Blue Bell Pottery in a nearby facility, acquired the porcelain company in 1935. The Finneys created beautiful bone china teapots with the Duchess backstamp; for the past 85 years, this name has been associated with Duchess China and is still recognised today. A.T. Finney & Sons (export) Ltd. was established towards the end of 1968 in order to aid in the expansion of the sale of exquisite bone china tableware and teaware into numerous export markets. The strong Duchess China brand was further strengthened when A.T. Finneys was sold to the John Tams Group, a local earthenware producer, in 1989. Unfortunately, the growth of low-cost imports led to the Tams Group's closure. In 1999, Grimwades Ltd, the company that also held the Royal Winton brand, bought the Duchess factory out of bankruptcy and carried on the tradition of making excellent bone china, teaware, and tableware. Having run and grown Heraldic Pottery for 20 years, current proprietors Jason Simms and Andrew Tooth decided to develop both enterprises in the early months of 2019.
