Encyclopedias were first marketed door-to-door to families that wished to provide their children with educational benefits as well as status symbols. The Encyclopaedia Britannica is a general information English-language encyclopaedia that is now completely published online. Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. and other publishers used to publish it. It was written by over 4,000 writers and roughly 100 full-time editors. The last printed edition of the 15th edition, which spans 32 volumes and 32,640 pages, was published in 2010. The Britannica was the English language's longest-running in-print encyclopaedia, having been published for 244 years. It was first published in three volumes in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh between 1768 and 1771. The encyclopaedia grew in size, reaching ten volumes in the second edition. Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. announced in March 2012 that it would stop publishing printed editions and instead focus on the online version. The 15th edition was divided into three sections: a 12-volume Micropdia of short articles, a 17-volume Macropdia of big pieces and a single Propdia volume that provided a hierarchical framework of knowledge. The Micropdia was created for quick fact-checking and as a reference to the Macropdia; readers are encouraged to study the Propdia outline to better comprehend the background of a subject and to locate more thorough articles. The Britannica's size has stayed consistent over the last 70 years, at around 40 million words covering half a million topics.
