Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. Despite being from Pennsylvania, where she was born, she spent the majority of her adult life in France, where she became friends with Edgar Degas and participated in Impressionist exhibitions. Cassatt frequently depicted the social and private life of women, placing special focus on the close relationships between mothers and their offspring. Along with Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot, she was referred to by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism. Diego Martelli compared her to Degas in 1879 because both artists aimed to capture movement, light, and design in their works in the most contemporary way.
