Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin (KPM) is an abbreviation for Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, which translates to "Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin." Frederick II of Prussia formed the corporation in 1763 after purchasing it from its previous owner, Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky, after it went bankrupt. Frederick II appreciated the factory's "white gold," a fine and translucent porcelain that nearly resembled the high-quality porcelain produced in China. He put a lot of money into the company and gave it the right to use the royal sceptre as its symbol. For his palace, he also had many KPM porcelain pieces manufactured in the Rococo style.
