French modernist painter Édouard Manet was a key player in the shift from Realism to Impressionism and one of the first artists of the 19th century to represent contemporary life. Manet, who was raised in a wealthy and politically connected family, abandoned the naval career that had been planned for him and became engrossed in the world of painting. During the final two decades of his life, Manet forged relationships with other notable artists of the day and created a straightforward, uncomplicated style that would become a major influence on painters of the future.
