Although absent from the original 1843 edition by Chapman and Hall, this particular scene has inspired artistic interpretations by Sol Eytinge, Jr. in 1869, Fred Barnard in 1878 and 1885, and Harold Copping in 1924, with Copping's rendition being the most widely disseminated. However, it is Barnard's 1885 portrayal that precisely captures the moment described in Dickens's text. The other illustrations hint at an earlier, unmentioned moment when father and son traverse the snowy streets of Camden Town on Christmas morning after attending church, without the female members of the family. Dickens establishes a unique closeness between Bob and Tim in the text, possibly echoing his own childhood bond with his jovial but financially troubled father in Chatham.
