Bentwood chairs are largely defined by the innovative work of German-Austrian cabinetmaker Michael Thonet in the mid-19th century. He pioneered the industrial production of furniture using steam-bent wood techniques, which revolutionised furniture design and manufacture. Michael Thonet died in 1871, but his company, Thonet GmbH, continues to produce high-quality bentwood furniture today, with his descendants still involved in the business. The Thonet bentwood chair remains a timeless design classic found in homes and cafes worldwide, influencing later designers like the Eames
