The pottery enterprise of Peter Gerz II was founded in 1835, situated initially on Kirchstraße 1-3 in Höhr (now Töpferstraße). Simon Peter Gerz I, Peter's son, joined the venture in 1857, and by 1862, it obtained official government sanction, leading to its rechristening as Gerz & Söhne. Philip Jacob Gerz, the son of Simon Peter Gerz I, assumed control of the business in 1873. Subsequent proprietors from 1886 were Sebastian Maas and Johann Reitz. Sebastian Maas's son, sharing his father's name, was affectionately known as Jean. He implemented significant restructuring measures and in 1930, renamed the enterprise as Gerz-Krug- und Steinzeugmanufaktur, under the ownership of Jean Maas. Following Jean's passing, his widow managed operations until 1965. In 1966, the factory relocated to Sessenbach. However, financial difficulties led to bankruptcy in the 1990s. A new entity emerged in Hillscheid to continue the legacy. The hallmark featuring a jug within a triangle is widely recognized as emblematic of Gerz pottery. Its inception dates back to approximately 1900.
