Gorgeous Silver Plate Inkwell Stand manufactured by ‘James Deakin & Sons’ from C.1930s, England. James Deakin (1822-1900) was the son of John (a Britannia metal smith) and his wife, Rebecca, and was born in Sheffield. Deakin shared these facilities with other firms at first, but subsequently purchased and occupied the entire property. Deakin's sons formed ‘James Deakin & Sons’ as a private limited corporation in 1897. Deakin's output mirrored that of other renowned Sheffield silverware and electro-plate businesses including as ‘Hutton’, ‘Dixon’, ‘Atkin’, ‘Walker & Hall’, and ‘Mappin & Webb’ in the years preceding up to the commencement of the First World War. Willis Deakin, a director and son of ‘William Pitchford Deakin’, was discovered in a ‘Works’ lavatory on a Saturday morning, 1917. By 1937, the parent business, ‘Silver & Steelcrafts Ltd’, had collapsed due to disagreements over the appointment of Sheffield directors and the delivery of Sheffield items to the parent company. The assets of ‘James Deakin & Sons’, ‘Earl Street Steelcraft Works’, were offered for sale in 1939. ‘Deakin & Sons Ltd’, a cutlery manufacturer, had purchased the name ‘James Deakin & Sons Ltd’.
